On 1st July, 2019, the tenured professor Zhang Jinfa of New Mexico State University visited the Cotton Institute of HAAFS on invitation for academic exchange and made a presentation entitled “Crop Breeding in the Genomics Era: The Cotton Example”. More than 30 scientists of the institute listened to the report.
Professor Zhang introduced in his speaking about the detailed breeding process of Acala cotton, QTL mapping and the use of genomic information to upgrade the QTL database, and how to use the hybridization of upland cotton and sea island cotton to develop excellent materials. Professor Zhang is presiding over the statewide cotton biotechnology and high-quality cotton breeding at the State University of New Mexico. His research interests include breeding, genetics and omics of high-quality, high-yield and multi-resistant cotton materials.
After the meeting, Professor Zhang and the scientists of the institute exchanged ideas on the selection of glandless cotton and the breeding of hybrids from sea island and upland cotton. He also encouraged the young scientists to make active and innovative thinking and dare to break the rules in dealing with scientific research issues.
