New winter wheat variety ‘Heng S29’ with water saving and high yield

 ’Heng S29’ was approved through the national identification in 2016, and approved by Hebei Province in 2015. The breeding unit is Dryland Farming Institute of Hebei Academy of Agriculture and Forestry Sciences.

Main features
①Excellent performance of drought resistance and water saving with strongly developed root system. In 2015, drought resistance index was 1.277 and 1.125 under simulated drought stress in rain shed and drought field respectively, with an average of 1.201. Under the condition of 50 m3/mu irrigation at jointing stage, ‘Heng S29’ had better water-saving performance with 35.47% more root surface area and 35.47% higher average root activity than that of the control cultivar ‘Jimai 22’. The total root surface area at heading stage was 14.83% higher than that of the control, and the average root activity was 30.21% higher.
②Water saving and high yield. The yield of ‘HengS29’ can reach more than 500kg and 600kg per mu, under the treatment that irrigated 1 and 2 times with 50 m3/mu water per irrigation in spring. The water use efficiency of the cultivar is about 2.0kg/m3. A plot of 1.1 mu was randomly selected for production measurement, the yield reaches 676.18 kg/mu with 2 times spring irrigation. In 2016, the yields reached 677.02 kg/ mu measured by experts in the demonstration field of 500 mu.
③ Adaptability. This cultivar has good disease resistance. It is moderately or highly resistant to stripe rust and leaf rust identified by the National and Hebei Province professional disease resistance identification Organization. It was listed as water saving subsidy variety from 2017 to 2020 in Hebei Province, and is suitable for planting in the north of Huanghuai winter wheat area in Shandong, the middle and south of Hebei and the southern part of Shanxi in high water and fertilizer land. In recent years, the annual planting area in Hebei Province has reached more than 1 million mu.
